Sigurd, son of Jolf, was born to the coastal village of Svengend in the last part of the 8th century. His father was a warrior, a minor land-owner, and a kennel-keeper for the local lord, but sadly had many sons of which Sigurd was the fourth. As soon as he was old enough Sigurd went to sea to raise his own fortune, for he was unlikely to inherit anything from his father, and he had seen with his own eyes the riches brought back from the weak lands to the west. ‘Ripe for the Plucking’.

Indeed this proved the case, and Sigurd sacked more than one monastery and proved a right terror along the English coast. What he could not count on was the ire of those creatures of the other world, the Elves.

Sigurd is a rough man of a certain stock, and has great skill at arms, and a deep respect, even fear, of magic of all sorts. He has nothing but disdain for Christianity as the religion of weaklings, slaves and effeminate perfumed southerners. He holds fast to the Gods of his fathers and to the ways of his people. He is thus libel to judge some-one not just by who they are, but by how they speak and hold themselves. Those who seem to be warriors may earn his respect, and those who hold magic his fear. From all others he expects respect and deference. He wants to be respected by others, so often acts the ‘big man’, generous with his friends and occasionally foolishly gallant.
